Hurricanes are characterized by severe wind speeds that range from 75 to 200 miles per hour. Wind damage can be costly to repair. Here are simple ways to fortify your home against it:

Start with the roof. Your home’s roof is its first line of defense. Re-adhere any loose shingles and consider impact-resistant shingles when installing a  new roof. Adding roof strappings will help anchor the roof framing to the wall framings so the wind can’t lift your roof off your house. 

Remove dead and dying tree limbs. High winds can send tree limbs flying. Make sure any damaged trees on your property are trimmed or removed on a regular basis.

Secure your structures. Fencing, porches, sheds, and other structures can become dislodged in a strong wind, especially when they’ve fallen into disrepair. Inspect your yard’s structures and make sure they are firmly attached and in sound condition. Secure any parts that appear weak or loose. 

Consider replacing rock and gravel. These landscaping materials are easily lifted out of place by hurricane winds. They post a serious threat when hurtling through the air. Replace these materials with a softer material, such as mulch or dirt.
